Regaining confidence and harmony with your body through a safe and personalized procedure — this is the goal of breast augmentation, one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries in the world.

But what exactly does this procedure involve? What types of implants are available, and what should you expect from the post-operative recovery process?

We discuss this with Dr. Stefano Campa, a specialist in plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery.

What is Breast Augmentation? Breast augmentation is a surgery aimed at increasing breast volume or, in some cases, correcting certain types of breast deformities through the use of breast implants. The procedure is designed for women who are dissatisfied with their breast volume or shape, whether due to factors such as pregnancy or natural anatomical characteristics.

What Types of Implants Are Available? Technically, there are two types of breast implants, classified based on their shape:

  • Teardrop (Anatomical) Implants: These come in three different sizes and provide the option to enhance both the volume and shape of the breast.

  • Round Implants: These come in two sizes and are used primarily for volume increase without altering the shape of the breast.

How Long Does the Surgery Take, and What Is the Recovery Time? The surgery lasts about an hour and is performed under general anesthesia. The recovery period typically ranges from 10 to 15 days, depending on the individual’s recovery capabilities and the progress of the post-operative healing process.

Do Breast Implants Have an Expiry Date? How Important Is the Follow-Up After Surgery? Breast implants do not have an expiry date — they are not subject to a fixed lifespan after being implanted. However, it is important to undergo annual follow-ups, including ultrasounds and secondary-level exams, to monitor the integrity of the implants.

Can You Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?
Absolutely. With this type of surgery, we do not sever the retro-areolar ducts, which are responsible for transporting milk from the gland to the areola.

Why Choose Ars Medica for This Procedure? In my opinion, this is a crucial point because surgical procedures should always be performed in a protected and safe environment. The larger the clinic, with its extensive services and expert specialists, the safer it is for patients. When performing surgery, it’s essential to have highly specialized personnel. The multidisciplinary approach that characterizes Ars Medica ensures a smoother and more peaceful post-operative experience, both for the patient and the medical team.

What Is Your Greatest Satisfaction as a Surgeon? Let me share two examples:

  • The first: The smile on the patient’s face when they come in for their follow-up. We can tell if a patient is satisfied because they smile — they come to the check-up with a big smile.

  • The second: When a patient, who previously felt less attractive, says, “Doctor, I’m able to wear the swimsuit I wanted again. I can wear the top I wanted. This has given me a sense of femininity I didn’t feel anymore.”
